What is a helix?

Despite its complex shape, the helix reoccurs through nature and is a building block of life. We find the helix in every living organism’s DNA, in weather patterns, and galaxies. Imagine a sunflower, vine tendrils, pine cones, seashells, sheep horns, our fingerprints…each of these and so many more have the helix underlying in their structure.

Resiliency

In its very nature, the helix symbolizes resiliency, evolution, and growth. When a plant root comes across a barrier, such as a rock, during its growth, the root system finds a way. Rather than remain stagnant, it twists and turns to find a new path. It embodies a helix and creates stability. People too can call upon our resiliency, the helix -the shape that is within all of us - to twist and turn, push through discomfort, and find a new path and a new way of being.

Change & Growth

The image I use for change is a spiral staircase (or if it’s easier for you to imagine, a curly fry). We do not simply go from A to Z and boom we are healed. Rather, growth and change are like an upward spiral - a helix. As we climb up, we make upward progress, however, we also go around. This means we may find ourselves in seemingly the same situation we were in in the past. However, you still get to keep your upward growth. The tools, skills, and insight you gained along the way are still with you.
